World's three fastest men slated to meet Friday in Brussels
Reigning World Outdoor men's 100m champion Tyson Gay is on the card to
take on former world record holder Asafa Powell and current world record
holder and Olympic champion Usain Bolt Friday at the finale of the 2008
Golden League, the Memorial Van Damme meet in Brussels, Belgium.
If all three take to the starting line in what is expected to be cool
and wet weather conditions, it would mark the first time ever that Gay
and Jamaican stars Powell and Bolt have competed in the same 100m race.
While Gay says he looks forward to the confrontation, he also is not yet
fully healed from the hamstring injury he sustained at the U.S. Olympic
Trials in Eugene, Ore. Despite not being 100%, Gay won the 200 meters
Sunday at Gateshead in 20.26 seconds.
Other American men competing Friday in Brussels include 2008 Olympic
silver medalist Jeremy Wariner in the 400 meters, 2007 World Outdoor
Championships fourth-place finisher Matt Tegenkamp in the 5,000 meters,
2004 Olympic marathon silver medalist Meb Keflezighi in the 10,000
meters, 2008 Olympic silver medalist Kerron Clement in the 400m hurdles
and 2008 U.S. Olympians Miguel Pate and Trevell Quinley in the long
jump.
Women's events will feature 2007 World Outdoor Chapionships bronze
medalist Carmelita Jeter, 2006 World Indoor chamion Lisa Barber and
former LSU standout Stephanie Durst in the 100 meters, 2003 World
Outdoor champion Torri Edwards, 2008 Olympian Marshevet Hooker and Jeter
will compete in the 200 meters, and in the 100m hurdles, 2008
world-leading Lolo Jones and former Indiana University standout Danielle
Carruthers will vie for top honors.
In women's field event action, 2005 World Outdoor Championships silver
medalist and 2008 Olympic Trials champion Chaunte Howard will compete in
the high jump and 2004 Olympian Jillian Schwartz and 2008 Olympian Erica
Bartolina contest the pole vault.
