Triathlon: Ken Axford Named 2015 Developmental Coach of the Year

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. -- USA Triathlon Level II and Youth & Junior Certified Coach Ken Axford was recognized today as the 2015 Developmental Coach of the Year for his accomplishments in guiding rising triathlon talent.

Ken Axford

Axford (Colorado Springs, Colo.) distinguished himself as a coach of youth, junior, U23 and elite-level athletes in 2015, with seven developmental athletes under his direction earning USA Triathlon elite licenses. He coached U23 female athletes to fourth- and ninth-place finishes at the ITU U23 World Championships, as well as a third-place finish at the ITU U23 CAMTRI American Championships. Four of his youth athletes ages 13-15 earned podium finishes at USA Triathlon Youth Elite Cups, and he also coached seven qualifiers for the USA Triathlon Youth Elite & Junior Elite National Championships. PEAK Multisport, the USA Triathlon High Performance Team Axford directs and coaches in Colorado Springs, was ranked 10th in the U.S. at the end of the season.

"I am extremely honored to receive this designation," Axford said. "I'm thankful for my athletes and their hard work along with my support network including family, industry specialists, fellow coaches and mentors."

In addition to coaching athletes to national and world championship appearances, Axford also served as a coach at the 2015 Junior Select Camp, which took place at the U.S. Olympic Training Center in Colorado Springs in November, providing expert advice and counsel to 14 up-and-coming male athletes ages 15-17.

Axford serves as the USA Triathlon Talent Identification Coordinator for the Rocky Mountain Region. He coordinated the Rocky Mountain Region's Junior Talent ID Series, a five-race series aimed at entry-level athletes, and revitalized the entry-level racing opportunities for junior athletes in the area.

Coaches of the year are selected based on the performance of the athletes they coach, as well as service to the sport, athlete testimony and coaching character. More information on USA Triathlon's coaching programs is available at USATriathlon.org.
