Athletics: New race technology adds to the fun at the Steamboat Marathon

Celebrating 35 years, the Steamboat Marathon is bringing the race experience to a whole new level in 2016.

The full marathon, half marathon and 10K, take place on June 5 the perfect time for an early summer getaway. The valley is green, the temperatures are mild, and behind every corner on the race course there are expansive vistas featuring picture-perfect ranches and fresh wildflowers.

The participant packs have gone digital this year with the help of Virtual Race Bag. That means there will be even more great offers and opportunities to help make this the best race weekend ever.

The addition of the RaceJoy app will connect runners and spectators like never before. Participants running with the app on their phone can be tracked throughout the race by their family and friends. Yes, that’s right, relatives across the country can receive live updates of runner progress and even send personally recorded cheers and messages of encouragement. Spectators waiting to congratulate their loved ones after the race can use the app to receive an alert when the runner is headed towards the finish line.

Not only is the Steamboat Marathon a certified Boston Marathon qualifier, the race also features a half-marathon course with gently rolling hills, perfect for first timers. The challenging 10K winds through historic Strawberry Park and there is fun to be had for the whole family with a Fun Run that is free for the first 200 kids five and older ready to run a half-mile. The well-stocked aid stations are surging with positive energy and encouragement but the real fun is at the finish festival. Just steps from the finish line in downtown Steamboat Springs, the party takes place on the Historic Routt County Courthouse lawn with local Butcherknife Brewing Co. serving celebratory beers to race finishers.

"The Marathon is a scenic run through the gorgeous Elk River Valley finishing in the historic small town of Steamboat Springs. The small number of runners and idyllic scenery make it a unique experience that is not to be missed. Wonderful volunteers and excellent organization keep runners coming back." says Paul Sachs, the Steamboat Marathon Race Director.
