Athletics: This Week in Running for Week Ending March 20th

10 Years Ago- Kerryn McCann (AUS) took home the gold medal at the Commonwealth Games (AUS) Marathon, edging silver medalist Helen Cherono (KEN) by just two seconds, 2:30:54 to 2:30:56. Elizabeth Yelling (ENG) got the bronze medal at 2:32:19. Samson Ramadhani (TAN) won the men's gold medal with a 2:11:29 with Fred Mogaka Tumbu (KEN) next at 2:12:03 and Daniel Robinson (ENG) completing the podium at 2:14:58. Scott Westcott was the top Aussie male, placing 4th with a 2:16:32.

20 Years Ago- Andrew Masai led the Kenyan contingent at the Paris (FRA) Half Marathon with a 1:01:16, edging compatriot Paul Biwott Kipkemboi by one second. Thomas Osano was 3rd at 1:01:20 as Kenyans took the first six places. Nadia Prasad (NCL) won the women's race by more than a minute over Joyce Chepchumba (KEN), 1:09:15 to 1:10:23. Gitte Karlshoj (DEN) was 3rd at 1:11:56 while Nicole Leveque (FRA) was 4th at 1:12:04.

30 Years Ago- Edward Herridge (ENG) won the Pearl Assurance (ENG) Half Marathon with a remarkable 1:02:10. Twins Petr and Pavel Klimes followed with 1:02:11 and 1:02:31 respectively. On the women's side, Glynis Penny (ENG) was an easy winner in 1:12:47, well ahead of Rosemary Harrold (ENG) and Kim Webb (ENG) with 1:16:07 and 1:17:39 respectivey. Unfortunately, this course proved to have been about 500 meters short.

40 Years Ago- Chuck Smead (USA) won the AAU (CA/USA) 50K title with an excellent 2:50:45.7. Jim Pearson (USA) was nearly 13 minutes back in 2nd with a 3:03:39 while Darryl Beardall (CA/USA) ran 3:06:18 for 3rd. Jack Leydig (USA) was 8th with a 3:24:47. Penny DeMoss (USA) was the first woman finisher with a 3:48:27, followed by Ruth Anderson (USA) at 4:17:53 and Yvette Cotte (USA) at 4:26:16.

50 Years Ago- BenAssou El Ghazi (MAR) won gold medal at the World Crosscountry Championships, seven seconds up on silver medalist Derek-Austin Graham (NIR). Tracy Smith (USA) was the bronze medalist, another four seconds back. Michel Jazy (FRA) was 5th and Ron Hill (ENG) was 6th.

60 Years Ago- Antti Viskari (FIN) ran 1:03:54.8 for 20000m on an indoor track in Espoo FIN.
