Athletics: Marine Corps Marathon to Open Transfer Program on June 13

Those registered for the Marathon can officially transfer entry to another runner

QUANTICO, VA (June 6, 2016) - Annually, the Marine Corps Marathon (MCM) offers a unique opportunity for registered runners to officially transfer their entry to a hopeful marathoner. On Monday, June 13, the MCM will open the Transfer Program, enabling any registered MCM runner to transfer their entry to another marathoner, who will then run the 41st MCM on Oct. 30.

The MCM Transfer Program will be available online at MarineMarathon.com through Sept. 14.

"We understand that with thousands of participants, issues can arise such as injuries, deployments, business trips or family obligations that prevent an individual from properly training and running the event," says MCM Director Rick Nealis. "In addition, this program helps prevent 'bib switching' by enabling a registered runner to locate another runner and make the transfer official."

To further discourage bib swapping, the MCM has also released the video "MCM says Don't Switch Bibs".

To initiate an official MCM transfer, those currently registered for the 2016 Marathon must complete the online form available on the MCM Transfer page of the website. MCM runners will follow the instructions provided and include the new runner's information. The original runner will receive an email confirming the transfer request has been received, while the new runner will be sent an email inviting them to register for the 41st MCM. All transfer requests must be submitted online. Each new runner will pay a $50 fee to finalize the official transfer and must register for the 41st MCM within 72 hours of completing the transfer.

When transferring an entry, MCM runners will not receive a refund for the initial registration fee. Any monetary transactions will be handled between the two transferring runners. In addition, MCM entries may not be transferred more than once. Runners can locate each other through the MCM Facebook page.

MCM to MCM10K Transfer

MCM registered runners also can choose to transfer their entry to the MCM10K presented by Aetna, while entries are available. Currently open for registration, the MCM10K is the 6.2 mile run held in conjunction with the 41st MCM. While there are no additional fees to transfer from the MCM to the MCM10K, there also are no refunds for those who initially registered to run the Marathon.

The MCM10K is currently open for registration at a cost of $55 and is open to ages eight and above. Register for the MCM10K at MarineMarathon.com.

The 41stMCM will be held in Arlington, VA and throughout the nation's capital.

The Marine Corps Marathon (MCM) is voted "Best Marathon in the Mid Atlantic," and the "Best Marathon for Charities." The MCM honors the dedication, sportsmanship and patriotism of its participants. Also known as "The People's Marathon," runners from all walks of life participate in the MCM, the largest marathon not to offer prize money. The 41st MCM, sponsored by Arlington County, Brooks and Aetna, will be held on October 30, 2016 in Arlington, VA. No federal or Marine Corps endorsement is implied. #RunWithTheMarines
