Athletics: This Week in Running for Week Ending July 3rd

10 Years Ago- Martin Lel (KEN) led a Kenyan sweep of the top six places at the Peachtree Road Race (GA/USA) 10K with a 27:25, some 24 seconds ahead of runnerup Wilson Kebenei (27:49). William Chebor completed the podium with his 27:54 and Gilbert Okari also got under 28 minutes with his 27:59. In the women's race, Lornah Kiplagat (NED) edged Jemima Sumgong (KEN) by two seconds, 31:13 to 31:15 while Getenesh Wami (ETH) cam in 3rd at 31:55.

20 Years Ago- World-record holder Fernanda Ribeiro (POR) got a narrow win over Gabriela Szabo (ROM) in the 5000m at the Mobil Bislett Games (NOR), 14:41.07 to 14:41.12. Julia Vaquero in 3rd place, lowered the Spanish national record to 14:44.95 (still standing). Paul Bitok (KEN) dipped under 7:30 in the men's 3000m with a 7:29.55. He was followed by Salah Hissou (MAR) at 7:30.46 and Shem Kororia (KEN) at 7:37.46.

30 Years Ago- Ingrid Kristiansen (NOR) lowered her own world record in the 10000m at the Bislett Games (NOR), taking more than 45 seconds off her previous mark with a 30:13.74. Aurora Cunha (POR) was a distant second at 31:29.41 and Erika Verebne (HUN) was 3rd at 32:19.86. Said Aouita (MAR) defeated Marcus Nenow (USA) in the men's race, 27:26.11 to 27:28.80. Italians Salvatore Antibo and Stefano Mei followed with 27:39.52 and 27:43.97 respectively.

40 Years Ago- Olympian Don Kardong (USA) won the 7th edition of the Peachtree Road Race (GA/USA) 10K with a 29:14. Janice Gage (USA) was the first woman at 39:13.

50 Years Ago- Michel Bernard (FRA) edged Noel Tijou (FRA) to win a 5000m in Paris FRA, 13:55.0 to 13:55.6. Rene Jourdan (FRA) was 3rd at 13:57.0.

60 Years Ago- Derek Ibbotson (ENG) defeated Velisa Mugosa (SER) over 5000m in Belgrade SER, 13:57.2 to 13:58.8.

70 Years Ago- Emil Zatopek (CZE) won a 5000m in Warsaw POL with a 14:21.5 and came back the next day to win a 3000m in Prague CZE with a 8:26.8.

80 Years Ago- Don Lash won the USA 10000m title with a 31:06.9 and doubled back the next day in the 3 mile, winning in 15:04.8. These AAU championships were held in Princeton NJ/USA.
