Athletics: This Week in Running for Week Ending July 31st

10 Years Ago- Kenyans took 11 of the top 12 places in the men's race at the Quad-City Times Bix (IA/USA) 7M, led by Lawrence Rotich (KEN) at 32:13. Evans Cheruiyot was next at 32:19 and Gilbert Okari got 3rd at 32:34. Mebrahtom Keflezighi (USA) in 5th was the only non-Kenyan in the bunch at 32:56. Keflezighi was 7th this year at 33:42. Susan Chepkemei (KEN) won the women's over compatriot Jemima Sumgong, 37:35 to 37:39. Romanians Lidia Simon and Luminita Talpos race followed with 38:13 and 38:24 respectively.

20 Years Ago- Fatuma Roba (ETH) ran 2:26:05 to win the gold medal in the marathon at the Olympic Games (GA/USA). Valentina Yegorova (RUS) was the silver medalist at 2:28:05 and Yuko Arimori (JPN) was the bronze medalist at 2:28:39. Katrin Dorre (GER) was 4th (2:28:45) and Lidia Simon (ROM) was 6th (2:31:04). In the same day's 5000m final for women, Jun-xia Wang (CHN) won the gold medal at 14:59.88 while Pauline Konga (KEN) at 15:03.49 and Roberta Brunet (ITA) at 15:07.52 completed the podium. Paula Radcliffe (ENG) was 5th (15:13.11) and Lynn Jennings (USA) was 9th (15:17.50).

30 Years Ago- Steve Ovett (ENG) won the gold medal in the 5000m at the Commonwealth Games (SCO), edging Jack Buckner (ENG). 13:24.11 to 13:25.87. Tim Hutchings (ENG) was a close 3rd at 13:26.84. Liz McColgan (SCO) got the gold medal in the 10000m ahead of Anne Audain (NZL), 31:41.42 to 31:53.31. Angela Tooby (WAL) was the bronze medalist at 32:25.38.

40 Years Ago- Waldemar Cierpinski (GER) outran Frank Shorter (USA) to win the marathon gold medal at the Olympic Games (PQ/CAN), 2:09:55.0 to 2:10:45.8. Karel Lismont (BEL) collected the bronze medal at 2:11:12.6 and Don Kardong (WA/USA) was 4th at 2:11:15.8. Lasse Viren (FIN) came up short in attempting the Zatopek Triple, finishing a credible 5th at 2:13:10.8. Other notables included Jerome Drayton (CAN) in 6th (2:13:30.0), Francesco Fava (ITA) in 8th (2:14:24.6), Jack Foster (NZL) in 17th (2:17:53.4), Shigeru So (JPN) in 20th (2:18:26), Jos Hermens (NED) in 25th (2:19:48.2), and Bill Rodgers (USA) in 40th (2:25:14.8).

50 Years Ago- Martin Craven (SCO) defeated Colin Kirkham (ENG) to win the Milk Marathon (Preston to Morecambe ENG), 2:24:26 to 2:25:45.

60 Years Ago- Harold Hicks (ENG) ran 2:26:15.0 to win the English (AAA) marathon title.

70 Years Ago- Willem Slijkhuis (NED) handed Emil Zatopek (CZE) a rare defeat in Brno CZE where he posted a 8:15.5 to Zatopek's 8:21.0 over 3000m.
