If you're going to be a professional hockey player, you can't start as an adult. If you're not on skates by the time you're 10, it's not going to happen.

But a professional triathlete can suddenly emerge in her late 20s, with another career already underway.

Just look at Cynthia Wilson of Gatineau. In 2001, a high-tech career already underway at Nortel, Wilson had barely ever thought of competing in a triathlon. Now, she's been a professional triathlete for three years, finished 11th in the world in the 70.3 half-Iron distance and is thinking about turning to the sport full-time.
