Athletics (RWire): 2007 USATF Club Championship Series to Offer $65,000 in Prize Money

INDIANAPOLIS - As part of its ongoing club revitalization efforts, USA Track & Field has announced that its 2007 Club Championship Series will feature three national championship events with a total of $65,000 in team prize money. The events in the series will include national club championships in track & field, cross country and road racing.

USATF National Club Marathon Relay Championships, May 20, Denver, Colo.: 2007 marks the fourth edition of this national championship, which will be held in conjunction with the Post-News Colorado Colfax Marathon. A total of $30,000 in prize money will be awarded to the top five men's and women's teams. Defending men's and women's team champions are Boulder Express "BX" (Colorado) and adidas Raleigh Track Club (North Carolina).

USATF National Club Track & Field Championships, June 13-14, New York: The national championship will be held at Icahn Stadium on Randall's Island in New York City. A total of $10,000 will be awarded to the top teams. In 2006, the Executive Track Club captured the men's team title as well as the combined scoring (men/women) title, and Greater Boston Track Club won the women's title. Four regional championships will be held in June and July as "tune up" events for the national championships. The winning clubs at the regional championships will earn travel support to the nationals. The four regional championship events are: West, June 3, Los Angeles, Calif.; North, June 9-10, Edwardsville, Ill.; South, June 16, Lancaster, Texas; and East, July 6-7, Albany, N.Y.

USATF National Club Cross Country Championships, December 8, West Chester, Ohio: After a record turnout of nearly 1,200 athletes and 130 teams at the 2006 championships in San Francisco, the Club Cross Country Championships in 2007 move to the Midwest and Voice of America Park, site of the 2006 NCAA Division III Cross Country Championships. A record $25,000 will be awarded to teams in the Open and Masters divisions. The 2006 club champions were: ZAP Fitness (Open men); Boston Athletic Association (Open women); Front Line Racing Team (M40+), Asics Aggie Running Club (W40+), Club Northwest (M50+), Impala Racing Team (W50+), Raritan Valley Road Runners (M60+), Tamalpa Runners Inc (W60+) and Snohomish Track Club (M70+).

Clubs wishing to participate in these events must be registered 2007 USATF member clubs. Additionally, each athlete must be a 2007 USATF member and affiliated with their club as part of their USATF membership. Clubs should contact their local USATF Association to confirm their club's and athletes' eligibility. Association contact information is available on the USATF website at: www.usatf.org/associations/

As USATF expands the Club Championship Series, it will look to grow the events with enhanced promotional opportunities for sponsors and added support for clubs.
