Scotland’s Bella Comerford and her fiancée Stephen Bayliss are heading to next Saturday’s (October 11th, 2008) Ford Ironman World Championships in Kona, Hawaii, USA targeting success of a personal nature.
With the pair having already won 6 Ironman events with a further 9 podiums this year the British record holders for the Ironman distance triathlon (2.4 mile swim, 112 mile bike and 26.2 mile run) are top favourites along with fellow Brit Chrissie Wellington. However, they are not letting this fact get to them and are staying very ground going in.
Going in to the race Bella Comerford comments “This year my goal at Hawaii is a top 10 finish. I believe I can do that. And if I do, I will be over the moon! This is my first proper attempt at Hawaii. Looking back to my 2004 performance, I was naive, under-done and a nervous wreck. I can see that I am more experienced and fitter now, so able to cope with Hawaii better. In years to come I believe I can aim for a podium.”
Whilst Stephen Bayliss comments “My main aim for this year is to experience the race and get stuck in with the best in the world and see where I am. I have no big expectations but I am in good shape and feel I can do well. Over the next few years my aim is to win Hawaii and I see no reason why I can't. “
Bayliss and Comerford will be in Hawaii participating in the preparatory events for the Ironman that kick off next Tuesday (Oct 7th) in Kona.
