Athletics: 2-time Olympic gold medalist Tirunesh Dibaba set for return to Reebok Boston Indoor Games

BOSTON (Jan. 8, 2009) –Tirunesh Dibaba, the only woman in track and field to win two gold medals in Beijing, will top the roster of international athletes set for the 2009 Reebok Boston Indoor Games on Feb. 7, organizers announced today. Tickets for the 14th annual Olympic-style event are on sale now at or by calling 1-877-TIX-TRAC.

Dibaba, the 2008 double Olympic Champion at 5000 and 10,000 meters, is a fan favorite at the Reebok Boston Indoor Games, having twice broken the World Record for 5000 meters indoors here at the Reggie Lewis Track and Athletic Center. The Ethiopian superstar, who last summer added the World Record for 5000 meters outdoors to her resume, is also an eight-time World Champion in track and cross-country.

In the aftermath of her standout 2008 campaign, Dibaba’s 5000-meter World Record at the Bislett Games in Oslo was cited as the women’s Performance of the Year by track-and-field’s world governing body, the IAAF, and Dibaba was named Track & Field News magazine’s Woman of the Year. At the age of 23, she is on her way to becoming the best female distance runner in history.

She joins three 2008 Olympic medalists previously announced: Steve Hooker of Australia (gold, pole vault); American Jenn Stuczynski (silver, pole vault); and Nick Willis of New Zealand (bronze, 1500 meters).

Since the Reebok Boston Indoor Games began in 1996, more than 100 Olympic and World Championship medalists have competed in the event, which has also played host to six World Records and nine American Records. Sponsored by Reebok International Ltd., with its world headquarters in Canton, Mass., the event is owned and produced by Global Athletics & Marketing, Inc., an athlete-representation and events firm based in Boston. More athletes for the 2009 event will be announced soon.

The 14th-annual Reebok Boston Indoor Games, the second stop in USA Track & Field’s Visa Championship Series, begins at 5:30 p.m. on Feb. 7 at the Reggie Lewis Track and Athletic Center at Roxbury Community College, 1350 Tremont St. Information is now available on-line at, and tickets are available on-line or by calling 1-877-TIX-TRAC.
