The ÅF Golden League meeting in Paris Saint-Denis has a new event director. Laurent Boquillet, a former professional triathlete and sports marketing executive will now manage the July 17 meeting. He was appointed by the meeting's president, Bernard Amsalem.
"This nomination takes effect today and a team will be put together very quickly so as to ensure the best possible conditions for the 17th July 2009 edition in the Stade de France," read a statement released by meeting organizers. "Laurent Boquillet is no stranger to the athletics environment, which he has been involved in for over 15 years."
Boquillet, who turns 43 on Jan. 21, was a professional triathlete from 1984 through 1990. After his competitive career, he worked in marketing at Oakley and Nike, before doing a four-year stint with ASO, working on the Paris International Marathon. He spent another four years as an athlete's agent, then became director of sports marketing at adidas France. In 2006 he was named CEO of Juventus Merchandising, a Nike subsidiary.
Last October, the meet owners announced that longtime sponsor, Gaz de France, would no longer support the meeting after a ten-year run. A new title sponsor has yet to be announced.
