Adventure Racing: Untamed New England Joins The Adventure Racing World Series

17-Jan-2009 18:23:23 - Untamed New England Will Be the Only North American Qualifier for the Adventure Racing World Championship in 2009

Littleton, NH – After an award winning debut edition last Summer, the Untamed New England Adventure Race joins with premiere races from around the planet in the Adventure Racing World Series (ARWorld Series). The Untamed New England Adventure Race returns to New Hampshire in July 2009, this time as the only American race in the prestigious global Series. Podium finishers at Untamed New England will battle for over $10,000 in prizes and qualify for the World Championship race being held in Portugal in December 2009. "We're excited by the opportunities this opens for our race, for the New England region, for the American and Canadian teams who deserve a World Championship Qualifier on their own home turf, and for the environmental causes we promote;" observed Untamed New England Director Grant Killian.

9 races around the globe, including adventure hubs such as France and Brazil, host races as part of the AR World Series. In all of the races, teams compete non-stop for days of biking, trekking, paddling, orienteering, and other challenges. With this announcement, New England adds its name to this list of adventure destinations and participants in Untamed New England will explore the wilderness terrain of Vermont, New Hampshire, and Maine.

"We have been keen for some time to establish a North American event in the ARWorld Series and with the Untamed New England winning the ‘Race of the Year’ award from the New England Adventure Race Association it was an obvious choice. The race has demonstrated an ongoing environmental commitment, and all the race reports show that this event has a great respect for their clients, the racers." stated Geoff Hunt, Executive Director of the AR World Series. "The event also completes the geographical balance for the ARWorld Series and will enable the American teams to qualify on their own soil for the ARWorld Championship."

"I have raced in the New England area and am familiar with the landscape and history and look forward to revisiting this wild corner of the USA."

The inaugural Untamed New England Adventure Race saw teams compete in a wide range of disciplines across the challenging New England terrain. The course covered 200 miles and involved trail running, mountain biking, orienteering, rope and mountaineering activities, canoeing, conservation projects, and kayaking. Untamed New England is the most challenging event of its kind in the Northeast. For an interactive view of the 2008 race course, visit

The Untamed New England Adventure Race runs July 9th to 12th and will be hosted by the Balsams Grand Resort in historic Dixville Notch, New Hampshire. “The elegance of the Balsams combines with the outdoor ethos of the racers to exemplify the ‘Grand Resorts – Grand Adventures’ motto for our region” commented Peter Riviere, Director of the Coos Economic Development Corp in Northern New Hampshire, "This is one way the new generation experiences the outdoors, and our communities welcome their energy."
