Athletics: Will 2009 be your marathon year?

Just in time to keep your new years' resolution "running", the Scotiabank Toronto Waterfront Marathon (STWM) offers new incentives to lace up. With a special entry rate until January 27th and free access to the great outdoors, this is the perfect time to register and start training for Toronto's premier running event, which will take place this year on Sunday September 27th 2009.

Whether you are an experienced runner or a beginner looking to improve your fitness, the STWM has something for everyone - runners can choose to take part in the full marathon, half-marathon or 5k event.

"The Scotiabank Toronto Waterfront Marathon is the city's premier running event," said Alan Brookes, Race Director. "Our race has once again been awarded the prestigious International Association of Athletics Federation Silver Label (IAAF) status, putting it on par with other great city marathons like Athens, Tokyo, and Mumbai. The STWM is a great race for runners of all levels and abilities - it's fast, flat and festive!"

"In its 20th year, Scotiabank is proud to celebrate the successes of this unique, world class running event with our community once again," said John Doig, Senior Vice-President of Marketing for Scotiabank. "Last year's race exceeded all of our expectations. Over 15,000 people took part and raised a record $1.4 million for more than 60 local charities. The Scotiabank Toronto Waterfront Marathon brings the world to our waterfront and is an important event in our city."

This year is a particularly significant year in the event's history. As well as being awarded the IAAF's Silver Label status, the half-marathon and 5k, celebrate their 20th anniversary this year, making it one of Toronto's oldest running events. Many celebrations and festivities will take place to mark this special year and ensure it is the biggest and best that Toronto has seen.
