OTTAWA - Chantal Petitclerc of Montreal, QC and Kevin Sullivan of Brantford, ON are among the finalists for the 36th Annual Canadian Sport Awards. These awards are a tribute to the hard work, dedication and victories of our country’s finest athletes.
Finalist in the Female Athlete of the Year category is Wheelchair Racer Chantal Petitclerc. Chantal had an incredible 2008 season in which she set four World Records and earned five gold medals at the Paralympic Games. Other finalists in this category are Speed Skater Kristina Groves and Wrestler Carol Huynh. Chantal is also in the running for the Leadership in Sport Award which recognizes the outstanding contributions of a sport leader and exemplifies Spirit of Sport Values.
Along with Petitclerc, Kevin Sullivan is a finalist for the Leadership in Sport Award. A veteran on the international stage, the Beijing Olympics were his third Olympic Games. Kevin was a leader on and off the track in Beijing as he led the way for a very young athletics team. Kevin is involved in many areas off the track as he sits on Athletics Canada’s Board of Directors as the Male Athlete Representative as well he has been involved in delivering Athletics Canada’s grassroots Run Jump Throw Program. Kevin is also involved on the coaching side.
Jane Roos is the third finalist for the Leadership in Sport Award. Jane was a promising track athlete whose athletic career ended at the age of 19 in a car accident. She has since become Founder and Executive Director of the Canadian Athletes Now Fund.
The winners will be announced at the Canadian Sport Awards Ceremony on Tuesday February 24th in Ottawa at the National Gallery of Canada.
