OTTAWA - Chantal Petitclerc of Montreal, Quebec and Jane Roos of Toronto, Ontario were big winners last night at the 36th Annual Canadian Sport Awards Ceremony in Ottawa.
Chantal Petitclerc was named the 2008 Canadian Female Athlete of the Year for her outstanding performances. Among her many accomplishments, she set four world records and earned five gold medals at the Paralympic Games. Chantal captured the Female Athlete of the Year Award over finalists Kristina Groves, a speed skater and Carol Huynh, the Olympic Games gold medal wrestler.
Jane Roos, Founder and Executive Director of the Canadian Athletes Now Fund, was named the 2008 recipient of the Leadership in Sport Award. Jane, a promising track athlete whose athletic career ended in a car accident, met tight competition from the other two finalists: Kevin Sullivan and Chantal Petitclerc. The leadership award was presented by Athletics Legend Charmaine Crooks; Olympic, Commonwealth, World Indoor and Pan American Games medalist.
