Athletics: Rocky Mountain Half Marathon Unveils Virtual Race Challenge

Presenting Sponsor Enables Virtual Competition, Special Registration Entry Available Through Sunday

DENVER, Colo. - March 5, 2009 - Incorporating a virtual twist in 2009, the Rocky Mountain Half Marathon has officially opened registration for its fifth annual event that will take place on Sunday, June 14. The event, which will be held at Larimer Square in Denver, Colorado, will feature a brand-new online component. In a partnership with, the Rocky Mountain Half Marathon will make it possible for runners who are unable to attend the event in Denver a chance to compete and take part in Colorado's annual summer tradition.  

Athletes can register for the Rocky Mountain Half Marathon at Those that register by midnight on Sunday, March 8th will receive a $10 discount off of the race's early entry pricing of $65 by entering EARLY on the registration form.

Local Rocky Mountain Half Marathon participants can challenge runners in any location worldwide to compete against them using the online virtual service. The 'virtual' half-marathon runners can register for the event at, and then go to to design and create their own half-marathon course.

As the virtual runners traverse their custom courses, race data will be collected using iMapMyRun, iPhone, Garmin or Timex GPS data collection devices. Following the race, individualized results pages will be incorporated and ranked with all Rocky Mountain Half Marathon finishers in Denver. Virtual half marathon athletes will also receive an official Rocky Mountain Half Marathon bib number, T-shirt, and goody bag in the mail.

The Rocky Mountain Half Marathon is honored to partner with the Ronald McDonald House Charities of Denver as the official charity for this year's race. Celebrating their 30th year in Denver, the Ronald McDonald House provides temporary lodging for families of seriously ill or injured children.  Runners participating in the event are encouraged to support this longstanding Denver charity by bringing non-perishable food items to packet pick-up on Saturday, June 13 or to race day on Sunday, June 14. Ronald McDonald House boxes will be onsite to collect these non-perishable items from all runners and spectators. Runners can also make a monetary donation at the time of registration. With its new start and finish lines at Larimer Square, participants will enjoy running past the best of Denver's signature tourist attractions, including Coors Field and Invesco Field, Union Station, Sloan's Lake and the post-race party at Larimer Square.

Registration fees for the 2009 Rocky Mountain Half Marathon are: Early entry (through March 31st), $65; (April 1st - June 7th), $75; walk-up entry (if available), $85.
