Athletics: Junior Carlsbad Celebrates 20 Year Anniversary

20th Annual Kids Race to be held Saturday, April 4 on Carlsbad Village Drive

San Diego, Calif. (March 5, 2009) – In celebration of its 20th year promoting youth fitness throughout the San Diego region, the Junior Carlsbad is excited to announce its 2009 schedule of events. The Junior Carlsbad, a run for kids twelve and under, emphasizes fun and fitness, not speed. Every child receives a finisher’s medal, goodie bag, a Sea Life Aquarium admission ticket and official race tee shirt. The race will take place on Saturday, April 4, 2009.

“We’re really excited to be hosting our 20th year of the Junior Carlsbad,” said Rhonda Mulvey, Event Manager of the Kids Race. “It’s such a fun day for the whole community, and we love to get the kids outside with their friends and families to make it a day-long event.”

The Junior Carlsbad will kick off a weekend of family fun, hosting a morning of kids’ races as a precursor to the Carlsbad 5000, a 5K event for adults and elite athletes taking place on Sunday, April 5. Both events will feature post-race refreshments, prizes, live entertainment and a Health & Fitness Expo that will run throughout the two days of exercise and excitement. There will be awards for the top three finishers at the Junior Carlsbad (ages 5-12), as well as awards for the first 250 finishers in each age group at the Carlsbad 5000. Registration is available online for the Carlsbad 5000 at www.carlsbad5000.com and for the Junior Carlsbad at www.juniorcarlsbad.com.

Participants can also register the day of the race, starting at 7:00 am on Saturday, April 4. The kids’ races, which vary in length from one to a ¼ mile, run at 15-minute intervals throughout the morning. Participants are grouped based on age, and parents are invited to run with their children at no extra cost. Although start lines will vary because of differing course lengths, all races will finish at the corner of Roosevelt St. and Carlsbad Village Drive in downtown Carlsbad.

After race day, bring the whole family for a special celebration with the San Diego Padres on Saturday, April 11 at 7:05 pm. The Padres will host the Carlsbad 5000 and Junior Carlsbad participants for a special discounted price to come watch as they take on the San Francisco Giants. Tickets are available online through www.juniorcarlsbad.com.
