(Duluth, Minn.) The field for the 20th annual running of the Fitger's 5K Run & Walk has reached its capacity and registration is now closed. The 3.1-mile race, scheduled for Saturday, April 18, reached its race limit of 1,500, a new participant record.
Participants can pick up their race packets at Fitger's Friday, April 17 from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. or race day from 7 a.m. to 8:30 a.m.
Defending champions Mike Benchina and Jen Houck are both registered. Benchina will be vying to win the race for the fourth consecutive year. Other notable entrants include Scott Behling, Katie Koski, Matt Kramer, Kathleen Monaghan, Jeremy Polson and Kelly Keeler Ramacier.
The race, which drew 1,355 registrants last year, begins at 9 a.m. on East Superior Street in front of Fitger's and travels through downtown Duluth and Canal Park before finishing back at Fitger's. An award ceremony begins at 10:30 a.m.
All net proceeds from the Fitger's 5K benefit the Young Athletes Foundation (YAF). The YAF is a Grandma's Marathon program focusing on the promotion and development of youth athletics throughout Carlton, Cook, Douglas, Lake and St. Louis Counties. Since its inception in 1990, the YAF has contributed more than $325,000 to area nonprofit youth athletic organizations.
