The Subaru West Coast Triathlon Series organizers, sponsors and athletes gathered today at Saunders Subaru for the announcement of exciting new features for the 2009 season! National Training Center members, Paralympians, and other triathletes were in attendance to make the announcements.

Paralympian, Stephanie Dixon will be participating in the Series this year as part of a relay team for the "Olympic Battle of 2008 Summer vs 2010 Winter" athletes. "This will be a fun battle that will put 2008 Beijing Summer Olympians and Paralymians in relay team completions against some 2010 Vancouver Winter Olympians, bringing athletes of all sports together" Said Dixon.

Triathletes will have an opportunity to compete in Sooke for the Olympic distance 2010 World Championships held in Budapest, Hungary and the Long Distance 2010 World Championships held in Immenstadt, Germany.

Lucy Smith, local elite athlete and 19 time National Champion said "top quality events such as the Series are critical to the development of triathletes" To further develop these triathletes Smith announced the prize money at the Vancouver event has increased to $10,000 to attract more elite athletes to use the Series for training purposes.

"Despite the bad economy we are expecting to grow this year to 2500 participants, and our initial registrations are showing this growth trend" Said Event Director John Botelho. "600 volunteers and 20,000 spectators will also partake in the event".

Other additional features that were announced today included:

  • Police & Firefighter divisions added as World Games approach
