4x4 Improves at Florida Relays
FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. -- On a day filled with relays, the Arkansas Razorback women's track and field team made a big improvement in an important event on day two of the Florida Relays, in Gainesville, on Saturday.
The 4x400-meter relay clocked an improved regional-qualifying time with a seventh-place finish in the event. The quartet of senior Courtenay Brown, sophomore Shelise Williams, freshman Whitney Jones and senior Janine Davis combined for a time of 3:39.56. The time currently ranks 12th nationally and third in the SEC.
Earlier in the day Arkansas' 4x200-meter relay picked up a 10th-place finish. Junior Karen Thomas, Jones, freshman Courtney Blair and senior Etienne Chaplin combined for a time of 1:36.94.
In the sprint medley relay, the quartet of Brown, Jones, Williams and Davis clocked a time of 3:57.50, with a 51.21 400-meter split from Williams, good for a seventh-place finish.
The Razorbacks will compete next at the John Jacobs Invitational, in Norman, Okla., Sat., April 11.
Laird Qualifies at Texas Relays
Sophomore Luke Laird punched his ticket to the post season in the javelin on day four of the Texas Relays, in Austin, on Saturday.
Laird made his 2009 debut in the javelin on Saturday. The 2008 SEC Champion in the event, Laird marked a toss of 205-11 to open the season. He earned an eighth-place finish with his regional-qualifying mark. His throw currently ranks sixth in the SEC.
Arkansas' 4x200-meter relay picked up a sixth-place finish. The quartet of senior Mychael Stewart (21.18), freshman Travis Nollsch (21.39), senior J-Mee Samuels (20.19) and freshman Marek Niit (20.21) combined for a time of 1:23.47.
Freshman Rick Elliott, sophomore Chris Bilbrew, sophomore Michael Chinchar and senior Andy McClary competed in the distance medley relay. They clocked a time of 10:00.03 to finish fifth.
Senior Brent Rosson made his 2009 debut in the high jump. He finished tied for 14th with a clearance of 6-6.75.
The Razorbacks will compete next at the Sun Angel Classic, in Tempe, Ariz., Sat., April 11.
