Ongoing tales of youth runners highlight top videos for May 25th race
LOS ANGELES - (April 12, 2009) - Running enthusiasts in search of inspiration or information can find a wide range of videos on the LA Marathon's YouTube channel: www.youtube.com/user/LosAngelesMarathon. Topping the list are the stories of two 15-year-old runners who are participating in the hugely successful Students Run LA program.
Students Run LA trains thousands of at-risk youth each year to run the Los Angeles Marathon. Last year, nearly 3,000 students took part - and 99 percent of those who ran completed the race. This year, Hayley and Arly are two of many high school students who are using the marathon as a tool for health, fitness and achievement.
So far, the LA Marathon has posted three videos chronicling the training of Hayley - who is preparing for her third LA Marathon, and has already run sub-3:40 - and Arly - who is getting ready for his second, after his family last year doubted that he would complete the first. As the race date - May 25th - gets closer, Marathon officials will post additional videos of the two students.
"We're thrilled to use the power of new media to chronicle these students' amazing stories," said LA Marathon Marketing Director Peter Abraham. "We hope to inspire runners and spectators alike."
Other highlights on the Marathon Channel include training tips from elite marathoner Rod Dixon, as well as an inspiring video of Dixon's extraordinary victory in the 1983 New York Marathon, one of the closest marathons ever. The channel features behind-the-scenes videos with Marathon staff, explaining some of the work that goes into preparing for race day, as well as highlights from past LA Marathons.
With less than two months until the race, Marathon officials plan to post many more videos. Running enthusiasts, spectators and anyone else looking for diversion and inspiration can view the videos at the LA Marathon's channel.
With more than 20,000 participants, 12,000 volunteers and 1 million spectators along the course route, the Los Angeles Marathon is one of the largest organized road races in the world.
