Toronto (Monday, April 06, 2009) - The Brooks Canada Marathon Project is embarking on a fundraising effort to support the young women of the Girls School at the Uganda Rural Development Training Program in the Kibaale district of rural Uganda.
Every year the URDT Girls School organizes a 14km run towards which each student raises pledges. The money raised by the students goes toward supporting other Ugandan students of even more limited means. This year, Canadian runners will be earning pledges towards any number of races of their choice, with the proceeds going directly to support key athletic and education programs at the URDT School
The will to defy odds, test ones limits and be community leaders are traits shared by the girls of the URDT School, the athletes of the BCMP and all runners worldwide. As fellow athletes, the BCMP is encouraging all runners to earn pledges towards their next event/events to help young Ugandan women empower each other while learning crucial leadership and development skills.
Reigning Canadian Marathon Champion Tara Quinn-Smith is spearheading an effort to include the BCMP and the entire running community in supporting this cause.
I think this is an amazing project to be a part of. As a girl growing up here in Canada and having the support from our education system - I realize how fortunate we truly are. For the girls of Uganda, an education is a life changing opportunity; to be able to better themselves, strengthen their communities and learn to be leaders.
Through education and sport we can make this connection. In supporting these girls I join their cause and I challenge others in the running community to do the same. Let’s make a commitment to running— running not for ourselves, but for the betterment of others. These girls are truly inspiring and their story shows us what we can accomplish when we commit to a goal. I’m very excited to be involved in such an amazing cause and I’m really looking forward to doing what I can to help
