Triathlon: Winter Olympians to Battle at Summer Triathlon!

With the beautiful back drop of English Bay and the Vancouver city skyline, the Subaru Vancouver Triathlon organizers, sponsors, and athletes gathered today at Jericho Sailing Centre to announce the new features for the 2009 event. The press conference featured an array of Summer and Winter Olympic athletes, Ironman, and Series Champions including local Rachel Kiers (Subaru Triathlon 2008 Champion), Jasper Blake (Ironman Canada Champion), Darcy Marquardt (2008 Beijing Olympian), Ben Rutledge (Gold Medal Olympic Rower), Justin Warsylewicz and Brittany Schussler (National Team Speed Skaters and 2010 Olympic Hopefuls).

One of the highlights of event this year will be the "Olympic Battle" relay division to honour the athletes participating in the 2010 Vancouver Winter Olympic Games and other summer Olympians.

"I'm excited to be involved in triathlon, and I'm glad to see some winter Olympians here so I can stare them down -- the challenge is on!" said Ben Rutledge, 2008 Olympic Gold Medal Rower.

The event will be televised nationally on Rogers Sportsnet in a one hour show for the second year in a row.

"With the race course taking place in Vancouver Parks and the University of British Columbia, the television program showcases the beauty of Vancouver, its like showing a 60 minute tourism feature of Vancouver" said Race Director, Mark Shorter.

Athlete Jasper Blake announced that the prize money has increased to $10,000. "Top quality events such as the Subaru Vancouver International Triathlon allow for great preparation for Ironman Canada and Hawaii" said Blake.

To start the friendly battle, an entertaining tug-of-war was held on the beach after the press conference pitting the Summer athletes versus their Winter counterparts.
