New Year, New Trails, New Adventures - Experience the Fun
HONOLULU - (April 29, 2009) - Runners looking for an off-road adventure for 2009 can stop looking as XTERRA returns with more hills, roots, rocks and mud than ever before. Only in its fifth year, the XTERRA Trail Run Series can be found in fifteen states and eight countries. Thousands of miles have been logged during the 50+ event seasons, and this year is shaping up to be the best yet.
The 2009 schedule is made of nine regional series. Returning favorites, Southern California, Georgia, Tennessee, New England and Philadelphia, are joined by newcomers South Carolina, Colorado, Virginia and Northern California back after a brief hiatus. Distances range anywhere from 5 kilometer fun runs to the new addition of the 42 kilometer XTERRA Marathon of Trail Races coming up in October in Colorado Springs. With such a wide variety of races, there is truly something for runners of all levels.
Points will be awarded to the top runners in each series race. Those finishing their season with the highest totals will receive the XTERRA Regional Champion crown and free entry to the XTERRA Trail Running National Championship on Sunday, September 13 in Bend, Ore. Having been called "America's Best Trail Running Town" by the editors of Outside Magazine, Bend has certainly lived up to its reputation as this year's event has already attracted runners from seven states and three countries with five months still to go until race day.
Then on Sunday, December 6, the XTERRA Trail Running World Championship will once again take place at the majestic Kualoa Ranch located on the beautiful Hawaiian island of Oahu. Runners will race over the same ridges where major motion pictures such as Jurassic Park, Godzilla and LOST have been filmed. Normally closed to the public, Kualoa Ranch covers 4,000 acres and offers the ultimate Hawaiian experience to visitors and locals alike with views of its sparkling blue waters and white sand beaches.
Bend's own Max King and Ben Bruce of Eugene, Ore. burst onto the XTERRA radar coming in first and second place respectively in both the XTERRA Trail Running National and World Championships for 2008. These two dominated the fields with blistering speed, but with the ever-growing popularity of the XTERRA Trail Run Series, competition for this year is anyone's guess.
After last year's successful introduction of the half-marathon distance Xduro events, participation and talent are at an all-time high. While it is not necessary to qualify for either of the Championship events, twenty Xduro events line the schedule to help athletes train for these grueling endurance challenges.
The XTERRA Trail Run Series is circling the globe to provide athletes with fun and healthy ways to explore the outdoors. Runners from all walks of life are encouraged to sign up for their own XTERRA adventure. To find out more about these exciting events and the schedule, visit www.XTERRAtrailrun.com.
