MISSISSAUGA, ON, May 12 /CNW/ - The 6th annual Mississauga Marathon presented by Canon was a huge success, drawing more participants than ever before. By the end of race weekend 11,301 runners and walkers took part in the Canon Marathon, Sure Gro Half Marathon, Grand & Toy Corporate/Team Relay, Desjardins General Insurance 10K , Desjardins General Insurance 10K Student Relay, Biovail's "The Hazel" 5K and The Bell 2K. In addition to the runners, over 40,000 spectators and 1,200 volunteers lined the 42 kilometre course.

Antony Gitau from Kenya with a finishing time of 2:38:46 and Krista Duchene from Brantford with a finishing time of 2:51:39 were thrilled to take the win at the 6th annual Mississauga Marathon.

Bevin Stevenson from Hanover and Solomon Tsewameskel finished 1 second apart to take second and third place finishes for the men's Mississauga Marathon presented by Canon. The 2008 first place finisher Natalie Goyer of St Bruno, Quebec captured second this year and Jennifer Eberman from Toronto took third.

"The endless hours of preparation are all worth it when you see the excitement on the faces of thousands of runners crossing the finish line and the spectators cheering them on" commented Elliott Kerr , President of Landmark Sport Group. "This was definitely a banner year for the event. Everyone involved in this event should be aware that they had a hand in being part of people's dreams today. We owe a great deal of the success of this race to our corporate partners, our volunteers and a great group of runners."

Race weekend kicked off with cooler weather at Biovail's "The Hazel" 5K race on Saturday. Charles Sousa, MPP for Mississauga South was there to start the race and cheer on the participants as they wound through the streets of Port Credit.

Sunday's races; the Canon Marathon, Sure Gro Half Marathon and the Grand & Toy Corporate/Team Relay began with clear skies with Scott Russell of CBC sports announcing, Michael Burgess singing the National Anthem, running legend Bill Rodgers greeted the crowds and Mayor Hazel McCallion started the race.

The windy weather down by the lake didn't deter the families and students from joining in on The Bell 2K Family Fun Run/Walk and MaraFun as registration numbers were higher than in all previous years.

The 7th annual Mississauga Marathon presented by Canon will take place on May 15th and 16th, 2010.
