Virginia Beach, Va. (May 14, 2009) -- The Rock 'n' Roll Half Marathon, presented by SunTrust, will rock the streets of Virginia Beach on Sunday, September 6 for its ninth year running. Runners and walkers planning to participate in Virginia Beach's premier running event Labor Day weekend are encouraged to sign up before May 31 to receive the reduced, early-entry rate as well as to take advantage of the online training program.
"After the success of last year's event, we're even more excited to return to Virginia Beach this Labor Day," said Megan Bitsoff, the event's manager. "With the race a mere 16 weeks away, we encourage everyone to start training now."
The event boasts a flat, fun course, 20 rockin' bands on 14 stages and a beautiful boardwalk finish. All participants receive free admission to the Verizon Wireless American Music Festival with their race entry, as well as the headliner concert after the race. The post-race performance headliner for 2009 will be announced at a later date; however, previous shows have included INXS, 3 Doors Down, Counting Crows, LIVE, Goo Goo Dolls, Sugar Ray, Collective Soul and Journey.
Organizers are pleased to announce the continuation of the 'Rock Around the Block' event where local residents design themed cheering stations and compete to be the most enthusiastic and spirited block. Local high school cheerleaders also will compete in the 'Spirit on the Course' competition and motivate participants to the finish line throughout the 13.1-mile course.
Event festivities will begin with a two-day Health & Fitness Expo at the Virginia Beach Convention Center on Friday, September 4 and Saturday, September 5. The Health & Fitness Expo will be open to the public and feature more than 80 exhibitors with the latest in endurance sports gear and nutrition products.
