INDIANAPOLIS - Will Claye has been named USA Track & Field's Athlete of the Week after setting the American Junior men's triple jump record Saturday at the 2009 Big 12 Conference Championships in Lubbock, Texas.
A freshman at Oklahoma, Claye broke an almost 27-year-old record, with a hop, skip and leap of 16.94 meters/55 feet 7 inches. The previous record of 16.81m/55-2 was set by Greg Neal on June 5, 1982. Clay won the conference title with a mark of 17.01m/55-9.75 (+3.2mps).
Also at the Big 12 Championships, 2008 Olympian and American record-holder Jenny Barringer dominated the women's steeplechase, winning by an astounding 31.23 seconds in a meet-record 9:58.14.
Now in its eighth year, USATF's Athlete of the Week program is designed to recognize outstanding performers at all levels of the sport. USATF names a new honoree each week and features the athlete on the USATF website. Selections are based on top performances and results from the previous week.
