Athletics: 2008 Olympians/Paralympians Trying to Achieve World Standards at TISS on May 30

BROCKVILLE -- On Saturday May 30 at Thousand Islands Secondary School (TISS), several 2008 Olympians/Paralympians and top Canadian sprinters will be trying to achieve Athletics Canada standards on the fast TISS track for the 2009 World Athletics Championships in Berlin, Germany (August 15-23). The competitors already confirmed to race at the Procter & Gamble Track and Field Facility include:

  • Richard Adu-Bobie (Ottawa Lions): 2008 Olympian (Beijing) - 4 x 100m Relay, 6th place
  • Sam Efah (Calgary): 2008 Olympian (Beijing) - 4 x 100m Relay, 6th place
  • Jason Dunkerley (Ottawa Lions): 2008 Paralympian (Beijing) - blind runner with guide - Bronze Medalist at 1500m, 800m
  • Jon Dunkerley (Ottawa Lions) - 2008 Paralympian (Beijing) - blind runner with guide - 400m, 200m finalist
  • Charles Allen (Ottawa Lions) - 2004 Olympian (Athens), 110m Hurdles Finalist/4 x 100m Relay
  • Esther Akinsulie (Ottawa Lions) - multiple year Canadian champion - 200m, 400m
  • Amonn Nelson (Calgary) - former Canadian University Champion - 300m

The "High Performance" events are feature races at the 2009 Ontario Masters East Regional Track and Field Championships (2009 OMERTFC), which includes the "Burnbrae 2-Lap Community Walk" at 1pm (sponsored by the Egg Farmers of Ontario). Brockville citizen who walk 2-laps (800m) on the rubberized track will receive a ParticipACTION pedometer and Swiffer products from Procter & Gamble. There will also be a draw at the end of the Walk for 3 pairs of high quality walking shoes courtesy of Propet Canada. The feature events at the 2009 OMERTFC are:

  • 11:40am - Masters 100m (featuring Tony Powell, 1962 BCI graduate/1972 Olympian)
  • 12 noon - 800m "High Performance"
  • 12:30pm - 100m "High Performance" (first of two races for sprinters to achieve standard)
  • 1:00pm - "Burnbrae 2-Lap Community Walk" - sponsored by the Egg Farmers of Ontario
  • 1:30pm - 100m "High Performance" (second of two races for sprinters to achieve standard)
  • 2:00pm - 400m "High Performance"
  • 2:30pm - 1500m "High Performance"
  • 3:00pm - 200m "High Performance"

The feature "High Performance" events are being hosted by the Ottawa Lions. The 2009 OMERTFC is being organized by Brockville Sports in partnership with the Brockville Legion Track and Field Club and Ontario Masters Athletics.
