Fourth annual festival turns Midtown into a pedestrian-only playground
LEXINGTON, Mass. - (June 10, 2009) - Saucony Originals has partnered with the world-renowned Come Out & Play Festival as a participating sponsor of the New York City celebration. From Friday, June 12th through Sunday, June 14th, as cars take alternate routes around Times Square, pedestrian players are invited to romp through Midtown's sidewalks, parks and subways playing interactive street games created by the top game designers from around the globe. The games will take place along 45th Street between the Hudson River and Broadway and in Central Park, with home base at The Tank at the 45th Street Theatre.
Saucony Originals will be awarding select game winners with free shoe gift certificates and distributing Saucony Originals Winner! and Loser! headbands to participants at the festival's Opening Ceremony on Friday evening, at Central Park activities all day on Saturday, at the Players Party on Saturday evening and at the Awards Ceremony on Sunday afternoon. In addition, Come Out & Play staff and volunteers will be outfitted in Saucony Originals gear throughout the festival.
"What better way for New Yorkers to kick-off the summer than with a three-day recess," said Mary O'Brien, vice president of marketing for Saucony. "We're here to join in the fun, to celebrate play in the world's largest playground. It's an innovative, inclusive and inspiring way to get off the couch and connect with the real world."
The 2009 Come Out & Play Festival is the largest one yet, with three days of over 30 brand new games, including locative spelling games and golf with iPhones, chasing intergalactic aliens and competing in a rodeo. The opening ceremony on Friday night features a meet-and-greet about the games and the festival; a panel discussion on Saturday morning explores the intersections of geography and gaming; and a bumping party on Saturday night honors the people who make everything worthwhile: the players. New for 2009 is an awards ceremony on Sunday afternoon to recognize the best games of the festival. Visit www.comeoutandplay.org for the full schedule of events.
The genesis of the Saucony Originals Collection began in 1981, when Saucony launched the Jazz, the most technical performance running shoe of its time, establishing the brand's legendary fit and triangular outsole lugs. The Jazz would later become the most popular shoe in Saucony's history and the champion of the Saucony Originals Collection, which also includes the Courageous, the Shadow 6000 and the LowPro Vegan, among others. In New York City, Saucony Originals are available at the following select retailers: West (147 W 72nd Street), Stardom (444 Broadway) and Foot Gear Plus (131 First Avenue).
