New names, old reliables and current stars
ST. PAUL, MN / June 15, 2009-- Best of the U.S. Week 10 competition covered the Upper Midwest and Southeast parts of the country, qualifying familiar and not-so-familiar names, a current National Champion, and some serious up-and-comers. Reigning USAT National Age Group Champion Jason Schott won for Georgia (at West Point Lake Tri) along with relative newcomer and former collegiate swimmer Haley Chura. Chris Lutz of Warren took the title for Michigan; women's results from Motor City Tri are under review and will be reported when final. Fairly new but serious triathlete Jacob Deitz won for Ole Miss at Dragonfly Tri, while the absence of 2008 Best of the U.S. Champion Margot Hair opened the door for Angie Dickerson, a former collegiate swimmer and cross-country runner in her fourth year of racing. Meanwhile, next door in Alabama, Buster Britton Memorial Triathlon returns Jonathan Krichev, who race at the 2007 Championship, and Lori Goldweber, who has qualified to represent Alabama for the third time.
Also Sunday, Bismarck Triathlon, which was run as a duathlon due to 53 degree water temp at Misty Waters Marina, qualified the power-packed duo of Rob Gilles and Marnie Walth. Walth has been Queen of the Dakotas and a regional force for years. Gilles, is making a return to serious racing; in 2001 he took the region by storm, earning regional Triathlete of the Year, Duathlete of the Year and Performance of the Year honors.
