Athletes from 11 States flocking to Victoria for New Balance Race this Weekend
This Sunday will mark the 14th running of the New Balance Victoria Triathlon with over 800 participants competing in this classic event. Despite less traveling by Americans in recent economic times, over 20% of the athletes will travel to Victoria from the US representing 11 different states. Participants who make the trek to Victoria will be rewarded by the sheer splendour of the race course. Elk Lake is one of the most beautiful, race-friendly sites that Canada has to offer--it is no surprise that the event has become a fan favourite. Aside from the beauty of the course, a new feature of the race this year is that the athletes competing in the half ironman distance event will have the benefit of starting in one spectacular mass wave start.
This year the New Balance event will feature a diverse range of professional and amateur athletes including a duel between two of the best Master's women athletes in the world, who both happen to be local. Cheryl Murphy and Lucy Smith will duke it out in their hometown for the title of overall Champion, while in the pro men's field, local and Subaru Shawnigan Lake Champion Stephen Kilshaw will once again be racing against his coach and mentor, Ironman Canada Champion Jasper Blake, along with former National Team member Kelly Guest.
