(Duluth, Minn.) Grandma;s Marathon weekend kicked off tonight with the William A. Irvin 5K -- the first of three races scheduled for the 33rd annual event.
John Heitzman, 24, of Owatonna, Minn., dominated the men's field winning the 3.1-mile race in a time of 15 minutes and 24 seconds. Scott Behling, 19, of Duluth, finished second in 16:19. Behling is also entered in tomorrow's Garry Bjorklund Half Marathon.
In the women's division, Michelle Oman, of Mankato, Minn., won the event for the fourth time in the past five years. Oman, 35, had a winning time of 17:53, finishing ahead of 20-year-old Raynee DeGrio of St. Paul, Minn., who finished in 19:15. Oman and DeGrio placed first and second at the same race in 2008. Oman becomes the first female to win the William A. Irvin 5K four times — Katie McGee (Koski) won the event three consecutive years —1994-96.
A record 1,522 registered for the event with an unofficial 1,289 runners -- also a race record -- finishing the race. For complete results, visit GrandmasMarathon.com.
The 19th annual Garry Bjorklund Half Marathon and 33rd Grandma’s Marathon are tomorrow at 6:30 a.m. and 7:30 a.m., respectively.
