Inaugural Rock 'n' Roll Seattle Marathon & Half Marathon Already a Smash Hit
Seattle, WA -- June 19, 2009 -- The inaugural Rock 'n' Roll Seattle Marathon & Half Marathon, a Seafair signature event, will debut next Saturday, June 27 hosting a field of 25,000 runners.
"As our fourth event of the 2009 series, Rock 'n' Roll Seattle has exceeded every one of our initial expectations," said Bruce Herring, Senior Vice-President of the Competitor Group. "The excitement throughout the nation has been tremendous. We are certain that it will be a summer kickoff event unlike no other in the Pacific Northwest."
The largest combined marathon and half marathon in the Pacific Northwest will offer a scenic course that starts in Tukwila, runs along the shores of Lake Washington and finishes outside of Qwest Field. The region's ideal summer temperatures have contributed to its appeal as a summer destination, with over 60% of all event participants traveling from outside King County.
"A majority of the runners are traveling to Seattle from out of town," added Herring. "This means not only millions of dollars for local businesses, but a community-wide focus on health and well being that is sure to continue long after event weekend."
The Rock 'n' Roll Marathon format is an enjoyable experience for both race participants and spectators with live local bands every mile along the course playing original and cover songs to energize the runners. The races also feature a cheerleading spirit competition, which showcases local cheerleading squads along the sidelines rooting for race participants all the way to the finish line.
In addition to promoting fun and fitness, 12 official charities will raise approximately $4 million at the race this year. Of the 1,700 charity runners registered, over 1,400 will be participating with the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society's Team In Training (TNT). Through the Rock 'n' Roll Seattle event, TNT will bring their 12 year fundraising total to over $200 million (net) throughout the history of the Rock 'n' Roll Marathon Series.
Race weekend kicks off Thursday, June 25 with a free two-day Health & Fitness Expo at the Qwest Event Center that is open to the public. The Expo, where all participants must pick up their bib number and race packet, will be held from 11:00 am to 6:00 pm on Thursday and 10:00 am to 7:00 pm on Friday, June 26. Over 100 exhibitors will feature free samples, the latest in running gear and sports apparel, as well as interactive clinics.
For those who still want to get involved with the event, volunteers are needed to assist with the Health & Fitness Expo and on race day at the start line. More information on volunteer opportunities is available at www.rnrseattle.com.
"Seafair is thrilled with the popularity of the inaugural Rock 'n' Roll Seattle Marathon & Half Marathon," said Beth Knox, President & CEO of Seafair. "There is no better way to celebrate the beginning of summer or the Seafair season than with a music-filled running event that will connect many of our neighborhoods and showcase the spirit of summer."
The race begins at 7:00 am, with former marathon world-record holder Paul Tergat, of Kenya, leading the professional field. The event will conclude with an evening headliner concert featuring Keb' Mo' at King County's Marymoor Park. For more information, please visit www.rnrseattle.com or call 800-311-1255.
