For the 4th consecutive time Marcel Zamora (ESP) won, in front of his supporters, the race in Nice in a time of 08:30:06 beating Hervé Faure (FRA) and the amazing Billeau Simon (FRA) in addition to setting a new course record.
In a big surprise the winner on the top step of the women's podium was Tine Deckers (BEL) who won in a record time of 09:30:29 beating Christelle Robin (FRA), a native of the region, who completed the race in 09:34:19 and Martina Dogana (ITA) who finished in 09:37:35. This was a spectacular event that only the challenge of the Ironman race can generate. Report.
As usual blue skies greeted the 2,500 athletes and 80,000 spectators in Nice for 16 hours of a non-stop entertainment.
The 3.8 km swim was completed in a calm and blue sea by Clemente Mc Kernan-Alonso (ESP) in a time of 00:51:04 leading Olivier Marceau (FRA/SWI) by 7 seconds. Behind, Marcel Zamora and Herve Faure exit from the water head to head in 00:53:10 and 00:53:16 respectively. The stage is set, the fight will be tough. In the women’s race Tine Deckers exits in a time of 00:58:04 in 3rd position, behind Konschak Katja (GER) and Yvette Grice (GBR) who had a time of 00:56:22. Martina Dogana, came out of the water in 6th position in 00:58:53 alongside Alexandra Louison, just ahead of Christel Robin whose time was 01:00:18.
Olivier Marceau will cycle strong with a 04:45:00; 34 seconds behind of the Mike Aigroz' record of 2008. The stage will always change all along the bike part, in the 180 km of Nice's hinterland. Herve Faure, Francois Chabaud, Oscar Galindez (ARG), Simon Billeau and Marcel Zamora will entertain the bike course for an audience who came to attend the course in the villages and on the arrival : Promenade des Anglais. 5 minutes after Olivier Marceau, Simon Billeau the great French outsider will arrive with a Bike cut of 04:45:40, followed by Francois Chabaud (FRA), 5'35 left. Marcel Zamora warmly welcomed by his supporters had a bike cut of 04:48:59, just behind 04:48:35 Herve Faure, determined not to let him go. Concerning the women, Christel Robin created the sensation with a tremendous 05:05:22 bike. After a late Swim exit, she passes Tine Deckers (05:14:36) at km 56 and will not let her go anymore over the head of the race. The race record held by Françoise Wellekens (BEL) will then blow away.
For both male and female Pros, the marathon starts, under a tough sun.
6' ahead, Olivier Marceau, one of the main favorites of the race, won't resist to the Iron Marcel Zamora. The Spanish champion gains precious minutes since the first loop and passes him in the middle of the 2nd. He then beats his own record, signing a time of 02:43:17. Herve Faure also goes over him and crosses the finish line completing the 42 km in 02:54:26. The third entrant Simon Billeau, with his strong determination finishes his bike in 03:00:41. This will be the ranking for the podium. Meanwhile the women also lead their last kilometers of this long day. Christel Robin the last minute pro entrant hang out the run ahead Tine Deckers (03:11:58) on the first and second loop but she will let the first place go in the 3rd lap with a final Run cut of time of 3:22:23. The 2008's winner Martina Dogana will grab the 3rd place with a 3:01:20 Run.
A very struggled race for an invincible champion, who enjoyed the Ironman of Nice as ever. A tough fight for 2 brand new Ironman pro females. The day has been great for the audience, the volunteers, athletes and organizers.
