Organisers of the Dextro Energy Triathlon ITU World Championship, London, have announced an exciting addition to their Age Group event programme which is due to take place on August 16th -- the day after the elite races are contested on the Olympic venue in Hyde Park.
Participants now have the opportunity to race an Olympic Distance event. This will be a 1500m swim, 40km bike ride and 10km run and will take place in a series of laps in a spectator-friendly format. So family and friends will be able to see the action close-up.
"We are delighted to be able to react to the demand for an Olympic Distance event", said a spokesperson for Upsolut, the event management company who are staging the event on behalf of the International Triathlon Union.
"We were offered more flexibility on the timetable and decided to grab the opportunity. With bigger gaps between the start waves we can offer an Olympic distance safely".
Entry information for the Olympic Distance is available on www.triathlon-wcs-london.org. Registration for this event will open on July 14th and close on July 26th. Those triathletes who may have already registered for the Sprint Distance event will be able to transfer or stick with their original option and the deadline for all entries has been moved to July 26th to allow triathletes to make their choice.
Meanwhile, Alistair Brownlee's silver medal at the European Championships -- an event in which his younger brother, Jonathan, won the junior men's gold -- will have done nothing to dim the excitement of British triathlon fans at the prospect of seeing him race the world's best in London on August 15th. Brownlee, with his British team-mates, will be in action in Kitzbuehel this weekend and has already won two legs to the World Championships Series in Madrid and Washington.
