Multisport: Triathlon Part of National Senior Games This Weekend

Sport is one of 18 medal sports contested in San Francisco, August 1-15

SAN FRANCISCO, Calif. (July 26, 2009) -- Triathlon is one of 18 medal sports at the 2009 Summer National Senior Games being held in San Francisco, Calif., August 1-15.

More than 160 triathletes ranging in age from 50 to 85 will race a 400m swim, 20k bike, and 5k run at the Port of Redwood City venue on Saturday, August 1.

Among the competitors are several who have made their names as USA Triathlon All America selections and members of Team USA, including the following:

50-54 Female: Lynn M Reedy, CA
55-59 Female: Ruth A. King, PA
60-64 Female: Paula E Larsen, WI
50-54 Male: Eugene Allwine, ID, and Perry Lange, VA
60-64 Male: Don Utsinger, IA
75-79 Male: Brad Leonard, VA
80-84 Male: Frank Farrar, SD

Located just seven miles from the Stanford University Campus, the Port of Redwood City has over a mile of waterfront public access, including walking and viewing areas. The Port is the location each spring for "Opening Day" of boating season. Events regularly held on the waterfront of the Port include crew races, Hawaiian outrigger canoe races, and sailing regattas. The Stanford Boathouse is situated on the waterfront. The 400-meter swim will take place in a sheltered cove. Both cycling and running will be held on fast, flat courses through adjacent office parks.

Terry Davis of Tri-California Events is serving as race director for the event. Davis brings more than 25 years of experience producing events and is responsible for some of the most popular triathlons in the world. He organizes and oversees the Wildflower Triathlons, Scott Tinley's Adventures, the Treasure Island Triathlon, and the popular Escape from Alcatraz Triathlon.

More than 10,000 athletes are expected to participate in 580 events from the 18 medal sports and seven demonstration sports over the Games' two weeks of competition.

Qualifying for many of the events took place at 50 state senior games championships in 2008. All athletes who participated in a 2008 State Senior Games and finished their competition were eligible to enter the 2009 National Senior Games.
