Athletics: 3rd Annual Run for the Horses 5K & 1-Mile Fun Walk and Dog Parade

"A Day of Family Fun!"

Asheville, NC, Sunday, September 20, 2009: The 3rd Annual Run for the Horses 5K Run & 1-Mile Fun Walk & Dog Parade is set for Sunday, September 20 at 2 p.m. in historic downtown Asheville, NC. The event will take place in the Buncombe County Health Department parking lot at 25 Woodfin Street across from the YMCA.

This certified course takes runners on a scenic yet challenging run through downtown Asheville, set in the majestic Blue Ridge Mountains. A popular, family-friendly event, the race has expanded this year to include a whimsical dog parade along with the one-mile fun walk and a great line-up of vendor booths offering everything from pets for adoption to the latest running gear.

Tasty treats will be provided by Food Lion grocery store and refreshments compliments of McGuire, Wood, & Bissette and Pepsi will be on hand. The course is managed and certified by RMS Race Management Systems and is on the Asheville Track Club's Grand Prix Circuit. Kids can enjoy decorating craft horses, dancing to the music, face painting, and petting our mascots, Joey and David--two friendly miniature horse. There will be wonderful raffle prizes and awards will be given to the top three runners in each age division for male and female as well as best overall male and female. Special prizes will also be given for the top three dogs in the parade.

Hope for Horses is a 501(3) (C) nonprofit organization providing rehabilitation and adoption services to the community for neglected, abused, and unwanted horses. You don't have to be a horse owner to have a great time at Run for the Horses! Families, children, and dogs are encouraged to join in the fun. Come enjoy a challenging run in the beautiful Blue Ridge Mountains and help these majestic animals find forever, loving homes.

Runners can preregister and pick up their packets at our promotional event on Saturday, September 12, from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Pet Supplies Plus on Hendersonville Road and again on September 18 starting at 4 p.m. at Black Dome at 140 Tunnel Road.
