Athletics: 6 Canadian relay team members eligible to run in individual events at the World Championships

OTTAWA - Athletics Canada announced today that 6 relay team members are eligible to run in individual events at the 2009 World Championships in Athletics to take place August 15 to 23 in Berlin Germany.

Relay coaches Glenroy Gilbert and Molly Killingbeck will confirm the final line up for relay athletes entered in individual events after a “tune up” competition in Dusseldorf on August the 10th.

Esther Akinsulie from Ottawa, ON, Bryan Barnett from Edmonton, AB, Jared Connaughton from New Haven, PEI, Sam Effah of Calgary, AB, Adrienne Power from Halifax, NS and Gavin Smellie from Etobicoke, ON have all met the IAAF’s entry standard for individual events and are eligible to compete in their specialty. “It has always been a head coach decision to support individual runs in preparation for the relay events,” stated Head Coach Alex Gardiner.

“This is a great opportunity for the athletes taking part in the relays to gain experience by racing in the stadium and on the track in Berlin prior to the start of relay events,” said Glenroy Gilbert, Sprints & Relays Coach. Gilbert adds; “It will also provide them with valuable World Championships experience”.

Relay members’ eligibility in individual events:

  • Bryan Barnett in the men’s 100 metres; Barnett took both the 100 and 200 metre titles at the 2009 Canadian Track and Field Championships.
  • Jared Connaughton, Sam Effah and Gavin Smellie in the men’s 200 metres. Connaughton, the 2008 Canadian champ over 200, made it to the semi-finals at the 2008 Olympic Games finishing 7th in his semi.
  • Adrienne Power in the women’s 200 metres; Power made it to the quarter-finals last year at the Olympic Games.
  • Esther Akinsulie in the women’s 400 metres; earlier this season she won a silver medal in the 400 at the FISU Games.
Felicien; Relay teams to get final tune-up
As one last preparation before the start of Worlds, both relay teams and hurdler Perdita Felicien from Pickering, ON will compete at a meet in Düsseldorff, Germany on Monday August 10th. Members of the men’s 4x100 team will compete in the relay event as well as individual events, the athletes on the women’s 4x400 team will compete individually in a 300 metre event to sharpen their performances and Perdita Felicien will also be in action as she aims for her third podium at the World Championships (Gold in 2003, silver in 2007).
