Athletics: Gryphon Women Have Record Setting Performances At Western International Cross Country Meet

The University of Guelph women's cross country team made the 35th installment of the Western International Cross Country meet a historic one with record setting individual and team performances. Led by Lindsay Carson's record individual run, the team showed the CIS that they will be tough to beat in their quest for a record fifth consecutive title.

After a quick opening kilometre the women's race quickly shaped up to be a battle between Carson and New Balance Vic Matthews Open winner Tamara Jewett of Toronto. Genevieve Lalonde making her debut for the Gryphons, sat poised in third as the last two CIS Rookie of The Year's battled it out. By halfway Carson had pulled away from Jewett and would go on to the win in a course record performance of 17 minutes and 1 second. Her teammate Lalonde, would pull even with Jewett just past the four kilometre mark only to be outkicked by the Varsity Blues' All-Canadian. Nevertheless Lalonde's 17 minutes and 35 second performance was the best ever by a Gryphon rookie. Behind the Gryphons' top two, the team's patented pack was crushing the rest of the field. With fourth year runner Courtney Laurie leading the charge, the Gryphons finished seventh, eighth, eleventh, fourteenth and sixteenth to compile a team score of 30 points, which was good enough for a 35 point win over the McMaster Marauders. The Gryphons performance also shattered the meet record for fastest average time amongst their top five finishers with a stunning 17 minutes and 52 seconds average, good enough to slice 36 seconds of the record. The Gryphons dominance was further underscored by the fact that three time All-Canadian Rachel Cliff did not compete along with National Junior Team member Robyn Mildren.

"I am thrilled with the women's race. We had a couple tweaks here and there which kept a couple of our stronger girls out, our depth showed through. We had a tough training week and are still in the strength phase of our training, so I feel we got exactly what we were looking for today" commented Head Coach Dave Scott-Thomas on the women's performance.

Like the Gryphon women, the Gryphon men also rested a few key players, most notably New Balance Vic Matthews Open winner and defending CIS Champion Matt Brunsting along with last year's CIS runner-up Kyle Boorsma. Despite the lack of arguably the team's top two runners, the Gryphons placed an impressive second behind Geneseo State, a top five ranked team in the NCAA Division III. The Gryphons were led by Allan Brett, who after a conservative first five kilometres move through the field to finish fourth overall in a time of 32 minutes 23 seconds. Brett was joined in the top ten by John Parrott (32:31) and Rob Jackson (32:38), who finished eighth and ninth respectively. Fourth year man Rob Koziarski and rookie Alex Hinton rounded out the team's scoring finishing 19th and 26th respectively.

"I thought our veterans ran a more controlled race than last year, which is what they were suppose to do and by Championships time I am confident they will win those battles of the back end. I think our rookies were stupendous, many of them were running their first ten (kilometre races) of their lives, on a tough course and it takes a lot of composure to do that well and they played it perfectly today." commented Scott-Thomas.

The Gryphons will next be in action Friday October 2nd at the Paul Short Run at Lehigh University in Bethlehem, Pennsylvania.
