Athletics: State Farm Melbourne & Beaches Music Marathon welcomes the Challenged Athletes Foundation as a charity partner for 2010

The State Farm Melbourne & Beaches Music Marathon weekend will have a wonderful new charity partner for its February 6 & 7, 2010 event - the Challenged Athletes Foundation (CAF).

The Melbourne & Beaches Music Marathon is one of Florida's premiere distance running events and hosts the USATF National Championship Masters Half-Marathon race and the USATF Florida Championship 8-k, Half and full marathon.
Information can be found at www.themelbournemarathon.com.

CAF is a California-based charity with a new and active local chapter here in Florida. It's mission? To help individuals with physical disabilities stay active through participation in sports. The State Farm Melbourne & Beaches Music Marathon is anxious to work with CAF to support the many challenged athletes, civilian and military, who need specialized sports equipment to compete in our events.

The plan is to create a CAF team for our 2010 event weekend through CAF's online Race for a Reason program. Every participant of any of our four events, whether able-bodied or physically challenged, is hereby invited to join the team and help support this very worthwhile cause while you run.

A minimum $100 fund-raising commitment gets runners a specially designed Team CAF running jersey and an opportunity to meet some courageous challenged athletes who will also be competing.

It's easy to sign up, fun being part of a team working for a common good, and a great way to support challenged athletes from the Space Coast region and across the state. Since the Florida Chapter is an all-volunteer group, 100% of the dollars raised goes to supporting programs for these inspiring athletes.

CAF worked with LabCorp in Tampa to raise just over $50,000 at the 2009 Gasparilla Distance Classic in February. Those funds were used to put on a first-class 15K wheelchair race, but more importantly to purchase sports wheelchairs and handcycles for 10 local young athletes. Their ability to provide this kind of tangible results from fund-raising efforts is a big reason why we invited them to be our partner at the State Farm Melbourne & Beaches Music Marathon.

"This partnership with the Challenged Athletes Foundation gives us a strong foothold from which we can all work together to support another great cause and give back in meaningful ways to the community," said Melbourne & Beaches Music Marathon founder Mitch Varnes.

Other charitable partners of the State Farm Melbourne Music Marathon include the Prostate Conditions Education Council, the Brevard Symphony Orchestra and the Brevard Schools Foundation.
