OTTAWA - The 2009 Canadian 10km Championships will take place this Saturday October 17 in Toronto, ON in conjunction with the Oasis Zoo Run of the Canada Running Series. The event will also serve as the stage for the Timex National Road Race Series Finale with provincial team and individual titles on the line.
Elites with an eye on the National Title
The start line at the Toronto Zoo will feature the strongest and deepest National 10km Championships field in years, maybe even decades. "We're just thrilled to see the National 10km Championships at the Oasis Zoo Run, and in Toronto" said Alan Brookes, Canada Running Series Race Director. Brookes adds; "This is by far the best Canadian field we've had in 20 years, I think it's tremendously exciting for the running scene in Canada and Toronto, and I'm sure the elites will also get a buzz from being at the front end of a big-city 10K."
Some of the notables include -
- Simon Bairu of Regina, SK, and Dylan Wykes of Kingston, ON are each looking to re-capture the Canadian title; Bairu is a 2-time national champion in the 10km winning in 2006 and 2008 while Wykes captured the 2007 title.
- Reid Coolsaet of Hamilton, ON raced at the 2009 World Championships in Berlin, Germany where he placed tops amongst the Canadian team in the marathon. He also captured the Canadian Marathon Championship title earlier this year; he'll be looking to add another title to his name.
- Eric Gillis of Antigonish, NS and Guelph Speed River teammate Taylor Milne of Guelph, ON both represented Canada at the 2008 Olympic Games in the 10000 metres and 1500 metres respectively. Both men are looking to add a 10km Championship title to their list of accomplishments.
- Malindi Elmore of Calgary, AB, and Megan Metcalfe of Edmonton, AB will race for the women's 10km title. Both are previous Olympians, Elmore in 2004 and Metcalfe in 2008, the duo are Canadian Champions in track events.
