Kenyan Gilbert Kirwa beat compatriot and defending champion Robert Kiprono Cheruiyot at today's Commerzbank Frankfurt Marathon, setting a new course record in the process.

Kirwa, who won the 2009 Vienna City Marathon in his debut last spring, clocked 2:06:14 to Kiprono Cheruiyot's 2:06:23, more than a minute faster than Kiprono Cheruiyot's course record of 2:07:21 set last year when he was the surprise winnner in his marathon debut. Veteran William Kiplagat, who is Kiprono Cheruiyot's coach, finished third in 2:07:05.

Robert Kiprono Cheruiyot is not the same athlete as Robert Kipkoech Cheruiyot, the four-time Boston Marathon champion.

Demonstrating how the depth of talent in marathoning is exploding, especially in Africa, 25 men broke 2 hours 19 minutes, all but three from African nations. Austria's Günther Weidlinger was the only non-African to crack the top-20, finishing tenth in 2:10:47, a personal best and a new Austrian record.

Victory on the women's side also went to a Kenyan, Agnes Kiprop, the 2009 Turin Marathon champion. Kiprop ran 2:26:57 just five seconds slower than her career best. Her time was well off of Russian Alevtina Biktimirova's course record of 2:25:12 set in 2005. Kenyan Hellen Kimutai (2:27:50) and Pole Karolina Jarzynska (2:29:10) rounded out the podium.

German athletes did not figure in the overall outcome of the race. The best German performance on the men's side was by Steffen Justus who finished 24th in 2:18:44, while on the women's side master Luminita Zaituc finished 10th in 2:35:06. Zaituc had won the race in 2003 and had said prior to this year's event that it would be her last competitive marathon.
