Athletics: 13.1 Marathon® Returns To Fort Lauderdale - "Where The Party Meets The Pavement"

Runners and walkers will be able to experience the beach in a unique way November 15 when the 13.1 Marathon® Fort Lauderdale presented by Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Florida returns to the streets of downtown Fort Lauderdale and Fort Lauderdale Beach .

More than 3,000 participants are expected for the prep race for the ING Miami Marathon ®, which will be held January 31, 2010. The 13.1 Marathon® Fort Lauderdale will begin at 6:13 AM as the sun creeps over the horizon on Lauderdale Beach .

Participants will start at the Broward Convention Center on 17th Street Causeway and work west to U.S. 1. They then will head north through the New River tunnel on their way to scenic Las Olas Boulevard, the famous stretch of galleries, cafes and shops that makes Downtown Ft. Lauderdale a pedestrian-friendly destination.

As the sun rises, the waves roll in and the participants head East on Las Olas toward the ocean, they then will turn north on A1A Blvd, home to Ft. Lauderdale's new 4 and 5-star resort hotels and the lively bars and restaurants that line the beach. The course continues north towards 40th Street for the turnaround and comes back down A1A where locals and hotel visitors will cheer on runners. The race will finish at South Beach Park at the south end of A1A, a beautiful sandy beach where athletes will get their 13.1 finisher medals and a pancake breakfast.

Fifteen entertainment stations will line the course that includes live bands, DJ's, and cheerleaders. Beach party activities will provide entertainment for runners and their guests. Various fun beach party-themed events will be a part of the post race experience.

The 13.1 Marathon Fort Lauderdale® is also walker-friendly. The course will remain open for 3 hours and 30 minutes (16 minute/mile pace). This is race number 2 in the Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Florida Running Series -- a total of 9 running events of varying distances. Upcoming BCBS events are the annual Turkey Trot (Thanksgiving morning), the Holiday Run on December 12, and the Tropical 5K on January 30 prior to the ING Miami Marathon ® and Half Marathon.
