(RRW) Athletics: Program Seeks To Brighten Children's Holidays With New Running Shoes

The New York Road Runners Youth Programs division is hoping to brighten the holidays for needy New York City children through their 3rd Annual Shoe Drive.

"Each year we have collected 200+ pairs of new running shoes for some of the neediest kids in our youth running programs," explained the NYRR's Elizabeth Carr in an e-mail message. "We collect and wrap the shoes and then distribute them with 'Sneaker Santa' at each school in early/mid December."

Youth Programs will match a donor directly with a child by providing the child's shoe size. Donors then purchase the shoes, and either drop them off or send them to the NYRR for distribution. The children who receive the shoes are all participants in the NYRR's school-based running programs, provided fee of charge to public schools to improve fitness and fight obesity.

"For many of the children in our program, this is one of the few gifts they receive all year," Carr added. "Many of the children we serve run in their everyday shoes which is both uncomfortable and unhealthy. Participating in this program by gifting a pair of new running shoes is an easy but extremely significant way to make a profound difference in the life of a young runner."

Potential donors can send an e-mail to youthprograms@nyrr.org to express interest and receive the specific shoe size for a child and find out more about the program. Or, supporters can make a donation of $50 via webapps.nyrr.org and the NYRR will purchase the shoes for them.
