With over 1000 competitors and some of the strongest fields ever, tomorrow's AGSI Canadian Cross Country Championships at the Guelph Arboretum promises to be extremely excited. The Championships boast six Canadian Championships on the line.
The Championships portion of the day will begin with the Masters (over 40) Championships, which will get started at 10:45 am. At noon, the Junior Women (under 20) race will go the race will feature University of Guelph rookie star Genevieve Lalonde; who has been fourth each of the last two years. At 12:45 the Junior Men's race will be run. By far the most exciting last year, St. Catharine's Mohammed Ahmed will be looking to capture his first Canadian Cross Country title after having the Championship ripped from his grasp last year in a photo finish. One of the most intriguing races of the day will be the Senior Women's race which features 2008 Olympic Finalist Megan Metcalfe who is rebounding after an injury riddled 2009. Metcalfe will have her hands full with CIS (Canadian University) and Puslinch native Megan Brown and NCAA runner-up Kendra Schaaf or Regina. Concluding the day will be the Senior Men's race featuring the incredible Simon Bairu, a six time Champion of the event. Bairu will battle Speed River Olympians Eric Gillis and Taylor Milne as well as Olympic Champion triathlete Simon Whitfield.
All the action will get started at 9:45 am with an open community race. There will also be a free kids race at 11:45 am. More information can be found at GuelphRunning.ca.
