Athletics: 2017 Run for a Reason Charity Program Raised $1.4 Million-Plus!

Nearly 9 out of every 10 dollars raised through the DICK’S Sporting Goods Pittsburgh Marathon Run for a Reason Charity Program goes to Pittsburgh-area nonprofits

PITTSBURGH - P3R proudly has announced that the Run for a Reason Charity Program presented by Bank of America raised more than $1.4 million during the 2017 DICK’S Sporting Goods Pittsburgh Marathon season. Since the Run for a Reason charity program launched in 2009, participants have raised more than $10 million for local, national and global causes.

"Bank of America’s support of the Run for a Reason program comes down to one thing: the power of a connection," said Brian Ludwick, Market President of Bank of America Western PA. "We’re proud to be a part of a program that connects over 2,800 charity runners with 110 causes to raise both awareness and an incredible amount of fundraising dollars for the Pittsburgh and surrounding communities."

This year’s top charity runner was Bob Lesnefsky, who raised $17,575 for the Dirty Vegabond Ministries. Lesnefsky’s brother, Andy, who also participated in the Run for a Reason Charity Program recalled his experience with the program: "Getting involved in the Pittsburgh Marathon has literally impacted hundreds of inner city kids. We've been able to substantially grow the support we needed for our ministry."

More than 2,800 charity runners participating across all of the DICK’S Sporting Goods Pittsburgh Marathon weekend of events inspired more than 20,704 charity donations for 110 local and national charities.

"The Run for a Reason Charity Program is fueled by deep community spirit and inspires runners to race for a greater good," said P3R CEO Patrice Matamoros. "The charity runners of the 2017 DICK’S Sporting Goods Pittsburgh Marathon impressively raised money for a cause close to their hearts and helped the program exceed the $10 million mark since its 2009 launch."

The charities who received the most donations include:

  • Cystic Fibrosis Foundation, $143,305
  • Humane Rescue League, $109,074
  • Light of Life Ministries, $93,956
  • Children’s Hospital Foundation, $86,295
  • St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, $80,268
