More than 1100 participants enjoyed the destination half marathon, 5k and one mile events
SANTA FE, N.M.--Boniface Kongin and Simegn Abnet Yeshanbel brought the thunder at the Santa Fe Thunder Half Marathon, taking first place in the menís and womenís fields. Kongin crossed the finish line with a time of 1:03:15. Yeshanbel completed the race in a time of 1:12:27. The Race Different boasted more than 1100 runners from close to 40 states and 10 countries. Nelson Oyugi and Pat Smyth finished second and third in the menís field. The top male finishers truly raced their way to the 13.1 mile mark, finishing within just steps of one another. Gadise Megersa and Susan Tanui rounded out the top finishers for the women in second and third place, displaying outstanding endurance and speed.
The Race Different features a point to point course from Ft. Marcy in Santa Fe, down the Old Taos Highway, past the Tesuque Village Market and Camel Rock, through the Tesuque Pueblo and finishes at the magnificent Buffalo Thunder Resort & Casino. Runners enjoy African drummers at the start and finish lines, live music along the course and participate alongside champion Tarahumara ultra marathoners. The Lighting 5K and 1 Mile Fitness Walk welcomes runners and walkers of all abilities on a beautiful off-road course. Buffalo Thunder Resort was the Official Race Hotel for the 2017 event.
