Runners can train in a virtual world with customized workouts to prepare them for the elevation of the Pittsburgh Marathon course
PITTSBURGH - DICK’S Sporting Goods Pittsburgh Marathon participants can be among the first to join a virtual training program that gamifies their experience and connects them with other runners from all over the world. Runners are able to make use of the customized program by creating a free Zwift account. Simply pair a Bluetooth enabled treadmill or foot pod sensor to the Zwift app to unlock a virtual world of workouts, group runs and even races.
"Zwift’s running platform is the first of its kind, and we’re thrilled to be the first marathon to partner with Zwift and offer the 2019 Pittsburgh Marathon participants this exclusive training opportunity," said Patrice Matamoros, P3R CEO. "We’re committed to ensuring our runners have the best race experience possible, and that includes helping them throughout their training and giving them the best tools available to accomplish their goals – Zwift Run helps us do that."
As part of the program, participants will be able to choose from hundreds of events, from fun group runs to fully structured training plans. Their workouts will take runners through five different virtual environments, from Watopia’s Mayan Jungle, to London’s famous embankment or through the futuristic interpretation of New York’s Central Park. In addition, Group Workouts will be designed specifically to prepare runners for the elevation of the Pittsburgh Marathon course.
"Zwift utilizes the many benefits of structured treadmill running and brings it to life through a rich virtual environment." Says Eric Min, Zwift CEO and Co-Founder. "Zwift enables users to train with fellow runners from the comfort of their home, delivering a social experience that keeps runners more motivated when training indoors. I’m delighted to partner with the P3R and provide a truly unique training experience that will undoubtedly benefit this year’s Pittsburgh Marathon runners."
The official DICK’S Sporting Goods Pittsburgh Marathon virtual training program includes:
- FREE access to the Zwift Run platform and training programs through Marathon weekend;
- Discounted Zwift RunPods;
- Group workouts on Zwift;
- Ability to find friends and run with them in real-time using Zwift’s meet-up feature; and
- Real-time tracking data and post-run metrics.
To participate in the program, runners will need a device to run the game (iPad, PC, AppleTV, mobile phone), a treadmill and a footpod. Or participants can hop on a bluetooth-supported treadmill for a seamless experience.
