(Los Angeles, CA February 21, 2019) -- Film Roman Productions, known for producing THE SIMPSONS, is to begin production of its first non-animated feature film, RUNNING FOR MY LIFE. Adapted from the best-selling autobiography by Lopez Lomong, it charts his remarkable rise from a Sudanese child-soldier to become the United States flag bearer at the Beijing Olympics.
In partnership with Brookwell/McNamara Entertainment (Soul Surfer), Red Heritage Media (The Ultimate Gift) and Tom Ratcliffe (Bannister: Everest on the Track), Film Roman Productions is proud to announce production is set for this inspirational story of survival and faith.
The development was initiated by Just Think Films, a division of Film Roman that focuses on funding, development, and production of Family and Young Adult pictures. The screenplay for this new feature was written by Bruce Johnson (Inside The Cold War, Love On The Slopes).
"We want to take audiences on a deeply felt emotional journey, with cinematic and musical energy that we hope will remind viewers of Lion and Chariots of Fire," said Steve Waterman, president of Film Roman.
"I’ve been taken with this story ever since reading the script," said producer David Brookwell. "There’s no better example anywhere of an athlete demonstrating the power of the human spirit. Sean McNamara and I are excited to help bring this extraordinary story to life."
Running For My Life tells the amazing story of Lopez Lomong, his journey from the unimaginable childhood horror of being abducted at age six by rebel soldiers to leading the U.S. Olympic Team into the Opening Ceremonies of the 2008 Beijing Olympics in front of a global audience of over 1.5 billion people.
Lomong is again appearing on HBO’s Real Sports with Bryant Gumbel on February 26th as he prepares for his next Olympic bid. Lomong has used the power of his story to advocate for and support humanitarian causes in Africa including clean water, education, nutrition, and medicine. His recognition continues to grow as an acclaimed motivational speaker. Mike Krzyzewski (Coach K), called "Lomong one of the all-time great motivators", invited Lomong to speak to the U.S. Olympic basketball team, whose members included LeBron James and Kobe Bryant.
According to Tom Ratcliffe, "This is not just a story of survival, but of an absolute refusal to be limited by false assumptions and misplaced expectations of others. Lopez’s journey is a clear example of how immigration strengthens this nation."
Whether it is Lomong’s association with Nike, his motivational speaking engagements, his faith or his message of hope, Running For My Life remains a top-selling book for HarperCollins. "From the moment we heard about Lopez Lomong’s dream of telling his story in a book, our team was eager to be the publishing partner to help him do it," said Brian Hampton of HarperCollins Christian Publishing. "The account of his journey from a lost boy of the Sudanese civil war to Olympic athlete is riveting and inspiring at every turn."
Production is set to begin July 7, 2019, with a projected release in spring 2020 leading up to the Tokyo Olympics. For further details about this project contact Film Roman Productions or visit the website for Running For My Life at RunningForMyLife.net.
